The story of Koma inu

The Koma Inu, paired along with Shishi (known as Shisa in Okinawa), are often called lion-dogs in English. They are noble and holy animals that protect the sacred grounds.  Often appearing as a pair, they act like watchdogs, guarding gates and doorways to prevent the wicked from entering.

They have a powerful presence with thick, curly manes and tails, muscular bodies with sharp teeth and claws.  One usually guards those living inside while the other protects the structure itself.

Koma Inu statues are made of stone and can be found either guarding the entrance gates or inner shrine of many Japanese Shinto shrines.
