The story of Hososhi
The seer of all directions, Hōsōshi appears as a four-eyed oni who sees in all directions, and punishes all evil that it sees. He wears special robes and carries a spear and shield.
Originally, the hōsōshi’s duties were to preside over the funerals for the recently departed and drive away corpse-stealing yōkai from burial mounds. The Hōsōshi’s most famous duty was the purification ceremony called tsuina.
Over time however, the Hōsōshi came to be seen as not a god that kept yokai away, but as an oni itself. With his association to funerals and corpses, he has become viewed as an evil spirit.
